🏖️ Québec City’s island of wine

Hi Reader,

Did you know there’s a whole island of wine less than 20 minutes from Québec City?

Île d’Orléans is famous for its fresh produce. Many of the city’s top restaurants source from here.

And thanks to the microclimate created by the St. Lawrence River, wine grapes can thrive here too.

The river helps keep frosts at bay and stretches the season just long enough for the grapes to ripen. So, you’ll find everything from crisp whites and rosés to sparkling and ice wine on the island.

On my latest trip, I spent a day exploring with Allison Van Rassel, a Quebec food columnist and champion of local producers.

Here are a few favorite spots we visited:

  • 🍕 Vignoble Ste-Pétronille – From bright, citrusy whites to terrace-ready rosé, this is wine with a view (and yes, there’s wood-fired pizza too).
  • 🫐 Cassis Monna & Filles – Blackcurrant everything. Think sparkling sangria, cassis dessert wine, and soft serve drizzled with liqueur.
  • 🦞 Chez Mag – Lobster…poutine…lobster on poutine. Need I say more?
  • 🍓 OhBio – Farm stand stop for organic produce and snacks. If you spot the Laurel strawberries, grab them. They’re extra sweet.

I put together a full guide to help you plan your own Île d’Orléans wine day trip with tastings, tips, and the best bites all included.

Cheers,

Laura

P.S. Most wineries here are only open from late spring through early fall, so plan your visit during the warmer months. 🌞🍷

Hi Reader, I finally made it back to Sonoma this summer. And it felt so good to return to one of the regions that made me fall in love with wine travel. I was there with a great group of fellow wine writers for a deep-dive tour focused on all things Sonoma (aka wine nerd heaven 🤓). Between panel tastings with legendary winemakers and talks on everything from subregions to soil types, let’s just say I learned a lot. And I came home with a whole new appreciation for the region. Hi Reader, Here’s a little secret: Some of the best wine trips happen after the crowds head home. Instead of being rushed through flights or competing for a patio table, you can actually take your time, chat with winemakers, and soak it all in. ✨ Honestly, that’s when wine country feels most special. ✨ Here are five destinations that shine when you skip the peak season. 🍇 Dry Creek Valley, CaliforniaSonoma is a magnet for summer crowds. Come in the shoulder season for tastings that feel more...

Hi Reader, Let’s be real. Wine country trips can add up fast. Between tasting fees, bottles you just have to bring home, and maybe a cheese plate (or three), your budget can disappear faster than a chilled rosé on a hot day. You might know the usual money-savers like tasting passports or case discounts. But today, I'm spilling some of the lesser-known ones I’ve learned after years of visiting wine regions. 🏨 Check Hotel Perks FirstBefore you even start mapping out tastings, ask your hotel if...
